Dance &
Movement

From a yoga class in New York to thirteen years in the dance world, and back to a movement practice of my own.

The beginning

It started with yoga.

I was 13, growing up in Queens, New York, trekking into the City (Manhattan) to take class at Integral Yoga Institute. I was caught in the current...

In college, taking yoga... it wasn't enough. I soon found myself in New York again, studying at the Lewis/Nicolais school. So began 13 years in the dance world.

1977–1979 · Beloit College

Chelonia Dance Company

Gerri Houlihan came to teach dance at Beloit College when I was finishing my Anthropology degree there. She created a supportive environment where I immersed myself, where I learned that dance was more than a class — it could be a lifestyle.

1978–1979

Milwaukee Ballet Company

Post college, apprenticing with a ballet company. It was a year of serious technique — it was ballet boot camp!

And besides, every dancer has to do a Nutcracker at least once.

1980–1984 · San Francisco

ODC/San Francisco

Five years in San Francisco, learning and performing the inimitable style of ODC.

1985–1988

Trisha Brown Company

What a privilege, a delight, a challenge, to do Trisha's work. It was like learning a new language — a language that you can only whisper, but which sounds louder and clearer than anything you've ever heard before.

And what an amazing way to see the world... including three months in Naples, doing Carmen.

Now

And it continues with yoga.

Today, I again have my yoga practice. I integrate dance, ashtanga yoga, Alexander technique, improvisation, trance dance ... I find my movement ... I soar!!
